Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025
Michael graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a B.F.A. in sculpture, and earned a M.F.A. from San Jose State University in California. During Michael’s college years he focused primarily on creating large-scale, site specific room installations. By mastering the ability to transform basic construction materials into art, his installations offered the viewer an enveloping visual experience.
After completing graduate school, Michael’s studio space diminished greatly in size. To accommodate working in less space he has been exploring the challenges of creating small sculptures that invite the viewer to explore a miniature scale while creating a monumental experience. These works, which he references as constructed or architectural landscapes, are made from small stone, clay tiles or wood. His architectural landscapes have been influenced by and are reflective of the geographical and physical environments of his surroundings throughout the years. This influence is also reflected in his 2-D work which enhances and reinforces his sculptural pieces.
Over the years, Michael’s work has been selected for numerous shows throughout the country and has received several awards including a Purchase Award and Best of Show Awards. While continuing to pursue his artistic endeavors, Michael has worked as an art teacher with developmentally disabled adults in California and as a Montessori elementary teacher in Arizona. Following the birth of his two children in less than two years, he became the primary stay-at-home parent. Michael, his wife and their two teenage daughters reside in Weston, Florida and Michael is currently working in his studio space at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
